LayerOne Inc. (www.layerone.com) expanded its network of NEXUS Optical Distribution Exchanges into the popular telco hotel located at One Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, as well as the Univision building in Dallas.

Jazztel plc (www.jazztel.com) signed a strategic alliance with Intel Corp. (www.intel.com) to develop three data centers that will offer ASP services to businesses. The data centers will be located in Spanish cities of Barcelona and Madrid, as well as Lisbon, Portugal.

Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (www.mmfn.com) signed an agreement to provide optical infrastructure to The University City Science Center in Philadelphia, for its new Port of Technology Building at 3701 Market Street. The building, which is designed to attract and retain high-tech companies, will be the first facility in the city to provide fiber optic infrastructure for virtually unlimited bandwidth to the desktop.

Simplified Development Corp. (www.simpletel.com) debuted BroadReach, a service that enables carriers to extend their reach into new regions with new telecom services without deploying new networks. Carriers will be able to connect to Simplified's service at carrier hotels around the country.

 AFN Communications (www.afncommunications.com) named the executive team that will be responsible for carrying out development of its 7,000-route mile network, which will span 13 states and Washington, D.C. AFN is now expanding its optical infrastructure, constructing 55 carrier-grade PoPs and delivering optical waves, private line, collocation and local access to its customers. New hires at AFN include a host of veterans from Williams Communications (www.williamscommunications.com). Gary Watson, who was named COO, came from Williams, where he was vice president of service delivery and assurance. Bunker Sessions, who was vice president of technology at Williams, joins AFN as CTO. Other former Williams employees coming to AFN include Bill Hampton, who was named executive vice president of sales and marketing for AFN; J.B. Manley, who will serve as the company's vice president of business development; David Cordeiro, who is now AFN's vice president of strategic planning and communications; and Kathy Case, AFN's vice president of administration. Brian Cantrell--co-founder, director and CFO for Brighton Energy LLC--was named CFO for AFN.
