Fiber Optic Association Inc.

International non-profit professional society for the fiber optic industry. Its tasks have included developing and administering a training curriculum and certification program, participating in standards activities and becoming involved in other programs to promote fiber optics as the organization grows and evolves.

Membership costs $50 a year, $20 a year for students. Certification costs $95 and is valid for two years. Membership in the association is required for the certification process. There are individual memberships, not corporate memberships. However, almost every manufacturer of fiber optic products has expressed an interest in supporting the association by recognizing the certification process and including its hands-on programs in the certification program.

Optical Domain Service Interconnect

Launched January 2000, this informal initiative has moved quickly to develop an important industry proposal for an open interface to the optical switched network. The ODSI functional specification defines the mechanism that will allow electrical layer devices to automatically signal the optical network to establish high-speed bandwidth on-demand. With interoperability testing completed, the ODSI coalition will continue with its original objective of promoting this proposal to formal standards organizations, thus accelerating progress toward an open, well-defined interface.

About 100 service providers and equipment vendors.

Resilient Packet Ring Alliance

To promote standards based resilient packet ring (RPR) technology and to encourage the utilization and implementation of RPR as a key networking technology for connectivity of various computing, data and telecommunications devices. The RPR Alliance hopes to nurture and help develop a broad market by promoting the proliferation of RPR into the networking market broadly defined including LANs, MANs, and WANs. It is also committed to promoting multi-vendor interoperability.

Made up of equipment manufacturers. Two classes of membership are available: Principal member, for which dues are $25,000 a year; and Participating member, for dues of $10,000 a year.
