HERE ARE A FEW CHOICE MORSELS OF advance news related to SUPERCOMM that didn’t make it into our preSUPERCOMM roundup in the May issue of xchange.

This year’s SUPERCOMM chimes in the comeback of investment in the core router/switch market, according to sources at Ciena Corp. “As our numbers attest to, there’s a strong bounce back for CoreDirector and CoreStream,” says James Rouse, senior director of product line marketing at Ciena. “New infrastructure in the past six months is at a peak rate versus how it’s been in the last two to three years.” Rouse adds that: “The inventory has finally been burned off from the bubble.”

Eastern Research Inc.

this month at SUPERCOMM expects to come out with a blade-based multiservice platform that does access concentration, grooming and switching. The company at CTIA announced base stations related to the product. This month Eastern Research will unveil another aspect of this solution that will fit in the switch site, says Denise Oliver, product line manager. This product is positioned to offer a lower-cost alternative to products such as the Cisco Systems Inc. 15454 multiservice over SONET/SDH product, solutions from Tellabs and other, higher-end products, according to Eastern Research.

VegaStream

, a VoIP gateway/middleware company, at SUPERCOMM will launch the Vega 50 6x4, which allows service provider customers to tap into VoIP services and equipment with a variety of connections, including analog exchange lines, analog telephone lines and basic rate ISDN. “It’s a smaller form factor than we’ve seen before; it’s showing you can get all variations of interface from the same [box], which is quite uncommon,” says Tim Burne, CEO.
