As you no doubt noticed on the cover, this issue of xchange is dedicated primarily to the subject of security.

Of course, security means different things to different people. And with all the potential threats that seem to be looming in this crazy little world of ours, it can be tough to figure out how to weigh the risks against the investments required to mitigate them.

The TSA is a perfect example of just how tough it is to gauge and address risks. First, it implemented the shoe removal process at airport security and took away our tweezers. Then, for some unknown reason, it got comfortable enough to allow passengers to board with small knives and razor blades. Yet, today, a bottle of Head & Shoulders works them into a lather.

So, xchange presents a variety of stories to help you get a better handle on key security issues and how they affect you, the service provider, and your customers.

In our cover story, KPMG offers advice on how service providers can protect themselves with the “three rings of privacy protection.”

A piece in our On the Tube section within discusses new security challenges presented by IPTV and suggests how some of these issues can best be addressed.

Chris Rouland of Internet Security Systems, which IBM Corp. this summer announced plans to acquire, tackles VoIP security in our New Telephony section. That section also features a piece I did on consolidation and new entrants in the session border controller space, and what it portends for the future.

In xchange’s Backstage section, our own Tara Seals delves into how to find and root out interconnect fraud.

Tara this month also explores Wi-Fi security advances and what remains to be done.

And, coming at security from a different perspective, Frederick M. Joyce of D.C.-based law firm Venable LLP offers some perspective on the NSA surveillance flap.

Take care,
