Lucent Technologies Inc. (www.lucent.com) today unveiled two new DSL access multiplexers targeted for tier 2 and 3 markets, carriers operating out of collocation environments, and medium to large multi-tenant units.
The Stinger LS 1 is a 19-inch rack mountable DSLAM that scales up to 720 ports per rack. The Stinger LS 2 is a 23-inch product that can support up to 1,008 ports per rack.
Lucent's original Stinger DSLAM, the FS, has 14 line slots and 672 ports per unit (or 2,016 ports in a 7-foot rack). But that product, launched in September 1999, was too large for many deployments, according to Bruce Miller, senior product manager for Lucent InterNetworking Systems.
These smaller scale products enable metropolitan area and in-building service providers to start small and grow as needed, he says.
The basic attributes of the Stinger, however, haven't changed with these new additions. Service providers still can use existing DSL modem cards and switch fabric modules from the original Stinger product, Miller says.
And all the products support various flavors of DSL in a single box, include a built-in loop test and ATM switch, and were designed to interface with voice switches to support voice applications.
List prices for the Stinger LS models are $423 per port for SDSL or ADSL G.lite, $556 per port for HDSL2 and $598 per port for full-rate ADSL.
QS Communications AG (www.qsc.de) out of Germany and NextLink Communications Inc. (www.nextlink.net) are the first announced customers of the new products.
