XO Communications Inc. (www.xo.com) introduced OC-12, OC-48 and OC-192 metro wavelength services in each of its 62 U.S. markets.

The XO Metro Wavelength Service, which is made possible by the company’s deployment of DWDM equipment in its networks, can deliver up to 33 separate wavelengths of capacity per fiber strand and gives customers greater network capacity and scalability at a lower cost.

The service is offered on a protected basis, which enables XO to manage and maintain its customers’ services and provision additional metro wavelengths, all without service interruption. XO is also providing a SLA that guarantees 99.99 percent transport availability per wavelength per month.

“This is further evidence that XO is one of the most innovative of the remaining CLECs, and is beating most others to the market with this offering,” Jeff Moore, an analyst with Current Analysis Inc. (www.currentanalysis.com), said in a report released yesterday. “This is not the first time that XO has been ahead of the curve, as the company also introduced gigabit Ethernet services last October.”

But, he adds, it is not an earthshaking event. “XO is to be credited for rolling out wavelength services nationwide and immediately, and for doing so on its own solid network (leased from Level 3 Communications Inc. (www.level3.com)),” Moore writes. “Other carriers are doing wavelength services on a market-by-market basis, and don’t really have a product that is as nationwide as that of XO.”

For instance, Telseon (www.telseon.com) announced in April that it was planning to offer OC-48 and OC-192 Metro Wave Service in 10 cities.
