As an answer to tight spending limits on telecommunications and data communications service providers and their customers, Sun Microsystems Inc. unveiled on Oct. 29 two “entry-level” servers.
The new Sun Fire V 880 for data center consolidation and remote access offers vertical and horizontal scale through processor and storage “multi-pathing” and clustering. The V 880 is priced at $49,995.
Sun (www.sun.com) also unveiled a “ruggedized” Netra 20 server for telecom carriers. The server is NEBs compliant and functionality includes signaling gateway, media gateway, session initiation protocol (SIP) processing and directory and portal services.
By leveraging its UltraSPARC III hardware and new Solaris 8 operating software, Sun says it can compete on price with Intel Corp. (www.intel.com) and Microsoft Corp. (www.microsoft.com) platforms without compromising high-end performance.
