Telseon has announced what it says is the first point-to-multipoint Metro Ethernet Service.

Point-to-multipoint connections improve the efficiency of data delivery of various applications, including remote data backup services for disaster recovery and business continuance. Storage service providers can reduce the costs of operational bandwidth and equipment required for point-to-point connections by sharing bandwidth among multiple customers yet maintain full security and data integrity.

To serve a remote customer, storage service providers may require 10,100 or more Mbps for daily incremental and weekly full backups, but only use the bandwidth for 15 to 20 hours per week. With point-to-point services, SSPs must purchase a dedicated bandwidth connection for each customer and server, or deploy and manage multiple aggregation switches at each remote facility. This results in low bandwidth utilization, high capital and operational costs and greater network complexity, challenging the economics of extending services to remote data centers. With Telseon's point-to-multipoint service, SSPs can use a single high-speed Ethernet connection to serve multiple customers and servers in a remote location without requiring new equipment. Bandwidth can be shared among multiple customers to maximize bandwidth utilization and reduce cost per customer.
