AT&T Corp., the No. 1 long-distance provider, has begun providing Indiana residents local phone service.
Indiana is the ninth state where AT&T has entered the local residential phone market. AT&T provides local service to approximately 2.5 million homes in eight other states.
David Dorman, chairman and CEO of AT&T, said last week the phone giant planned to offer local residential service in 14 states to 17 states this year.
AT&T, which resells local phone service, has expanded as state regulators have slashed the wholesale rates the incumbent phone companies can charge rivals to lease their networks.
