Cable operator Cox Communications Inc. has started to build a new phone network that it estimates will save the company millions of dollars in expenditures each year, telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks said Monday.

Cox already has installed Nortel equipment as part of a plan to migrate its telephone customers onto a national IP backbone network, according to Nortel. Cox ended the first quarter with nearly 783,000 telephone customers.

Atlanta-based Cox has installed Nortel’s Succession Communication Server 2000 superclass softswitch and the Nuera Communications ORCA GX-21 and GX-8 carrier-class VoIP media gateways, according to Nortel.
