AT&T this week launched a new residential DSL service that can be packaged as part of an AT&T communications bundle. The new offer, which is based on DSL services from competitive data service provider Covad Communications, is now generally available in New York state, and is scheduled to be release in several additional states this year.

The ability to bundle AT&T DSL service is based on a process called line splitting, which involves AT&T splitting the loop it buys from the Bells to offer AT&T local, long distance and DSL service on the same line.

In New York the standard AT&T DSL plan will sell for $19.95 a month for the first three months and $39.95 a month thereafter. The preferred AT&T DSL plan, which provides faster speeds, sells for $49.95; those customers that sign up in the first three months get a $20 discount during those months.
