Canadian service provider SaskTel is using optical equipment from Lucent Technologies Inc. to increase network capacity and offer faster, more sophisticated services.

"SaskTel leads the way in Canada, and possibly North America, in deploying high-speed Internet service, particularly in rural areas," says Kym Wittal, SaskTel CTO. "Lucent's portfolio of products will allow us the flexibility to provide better reach to our customers for future high-bandwidth services."

The agreement supports SaskTel's deployment of its high-speed network that supports IP-based video over DSL and provides a platform for enhanced Ethernet services.

Lucent products used include the Metropolis DMX family of access multiplexers and optical amplifiers from the Metropolis Wavelength Extension Solution to build regional transport rings in the province of Saskatchewan. The company will also supply the new Navis Optical Management System. Navis OMS, which became generally available in January, provides multiple network management functions, including element management, service

provisioning and service assurance within optical networks. SaskTel will be

using the OMS to perform single user, automated provisioning of optical networks and services. This allows customer services to be turned up quickly by using the automatic routing capabilities and point-and-click features of the OMS graphical user interface.
