Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks today announced two milestones the companies say enable service providers to gain the benefits of IP services and continue to deliver today's profitable data services on next-generation networks. The news follows the companies’ announcement in May that they had formed a strategic partnership, bringing Juniper’s MPLS technology into Lucent’s product line and giving Juniper access to Lucent’s strong standing in the RBOC community as well as the company’s other significant resources.
The Lucent and Juniper Networks integrated IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution allows service providers to offer corporate customers new IP-enabled frame services -- that is new IP services over existing Lucent multiservice switches and Juniper Networks routing platforms. New to this solution is the ability of Lucent Navis iOperations OSS software to manage Juniper Networks routing platforms. That enables rapid provisioning of carrier-grade VPN services and reduced operating expenses because it simplifies network management and enhances service quality.
The companies also announced a capability that enables service providers to carry ATM and frame relay services over MPLS networks while maintaining the same quality and reliability as is available today on an ATM-based network. As a result, service providers can save approximately 24 percent on capital expenses in addition to operational savings inherent in a converged IP/MPLS core network, according to a Bell Labs business case. This capability will be part of the Lucent Juniper Networks Multiservice MPLS Core Solution when it is available in the first quarter of next year.
