Aiirnet Wireless LLC and Pronto Networks on Tuesday announced a partnership to build what the companies claim is the country’s biggest Wi-Fi hot zone designed to provide wireless broadband access to the City of Cerritos, Calif.

Aiirnet, a Wi-Fi provider, and Pronto Networks, a provider of OSS solutions for Wi-Fi hot spot networks, say the full service will cover 8.6 miles and go live Jan. 1. It will be available to consumers, businesses and city workers.

“The City of Cerritos deployment is the largest hot zone deployment to date,” says Stan Hirschman, CEO of Aiirnet Wireless. “By partnering with Pronto Networks and other technology vendors, we will provide high-speed wireless Internet access throughout the entire city.”

Initially people only will be able to access the network outside, but Aiirnet says coverage will be expanded to allow residents to get broadband service from within their homes.

Aiirnet and Pronto made the announcement at the Wi-Fi Planet Conference & Expo.
