DG2L Technologies Inc. now sells the Neuron, which it says is the world’s first interactive HDTV IP-based set-top box based on MPEG4 complete with HDTV DVR capabilities.

Today most video systems are based on the popular compression technology known as MPEG2. But moving to MPEG4 – or another new option from Microsoft Corp. called Windows Media 9 -- can help service providers realize a 30 to 60 percent reduction of bit rate with the same quality. That means that if a service requires 3 megabits in MPEG2, the service provider can offer that same service over just 2 megabits with one of the advanced compression technologies, for example.
