Intel Corp. has announced a new family of Wi-Fi-enabled processors for cell phones and wireless PDAs.

The Intel PXA27x processors can handle various forms of wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth, the world’s biggest chip maker said.

The processors use new technologies to meet the requirements of advanced cell phones and wireless PDAs, Intel disclosed, with enough computing power to provide cell phones full motion video conferencing and PDAs DVD-quality video playback.

The processors, Intel said, are the first to integrate Intel Wireless MMX technology, providing extra performance for 3-D games and advanced video. The chip also allows for power savings by intelligently managing voltage and frequency changes.

Intel said it has integrated for the first time security features through its Intel Wireless Trusted Platform to provide such services as trusted boot, secure storage of private information, cryptographic keys, and support for common security protocols. Intel also has developed a high-speed interface that helps expedite data delivery from wireless networks to the processor at speeds of up to 416mbps.
