ADTRAN is scaling up its NetVanta router line with the 5000 Series family of products.
The company’s existing NetVanta 3000 Series topped out at two T1s, while the new 5000 models will go up to two T3s. Both are premises-based devices targeted at small and medium business applications.
Major telcos including Qwest Communications International Inc. SBC Communications Inc. and Verizon all use the NetVanta products as part of resale or bundled service offerings, says Todd Lattanzi, product manager for ADTRAN’s Enterprise Networks Division.
Key to the NetVanta products’ appeal, he says, is their significantly lower costs versus comparable Cisco Systems Inc. routers. For example, he says, while Cisco’s 3745 support a T3 sells for about $20,000, ADTRAN offers its 5000 products for just $8,900.
The NetVanta 5000 Series products, which are shipping now, include built-in firewall capability, support for up to 2000 IP VPN tunnels, command-line interface similar to that offered by Cisco, free firmware updates and free support. The 5000 products can also use IP VPNs for backup in the event the primary connection fails.
