The FCC on Thursday adopted an order denying a request by competitive local phone providers to increase the rates they are authorized to charge long-distance phone companies for originating and terminating calls.

The FCC said in a news release it affirmed an order it adopted three years ago, “which limited competitive LECs’ access charges to benchmark rates no higher than the rates charged by incumbent LECs, with few exceptions.”

The order denies petitions for reconsideration that would have resulted in increased access rates and clarifies several issues designed to provide greater regulatory certainty, the government agency said.
