Motorola, one of the largest vendors in the broadband wireless access market, has thrown its weight behind the WiMAX standard by becoming a principal member of the WiMAX Forum.

Motorola had been one of the notable holdouts in promoting the standard based on IEEE’s 802.16 over proprietary systems like its Motorola Canopy products. Canopy has been deployed in hundreds of networks in more than 85 countries.

The company’s 802.16 products are scheduled for availability in early 2005 and will initially support the 3.5GHz frequency band.
