Nuera Communications Inc. has introduced the ORCA BTX-4K media gateway to help cable operators manage a wide range of public telephone network interconnections as they launch and expand voice over IP telephone services throughout their cable systems.

The BTX-4K delivers new levels of system density and reliability to simplify the challenges cable operators encounter when launching and expanding VoIP telephone services. The BTX-4K is a PacketCable-compliant media gateway that provides up to 4,032 voice ports over six DS3 interfaces in a 5.25-inch high chassis.

The BTX-4K supports the protocol, codec and security functionality specified in the PacketCable standards.

"The scalability and high-availability characteristics of the BTX-4K will enable us to easily deliver our Cox Digital Telephone service offering in our markets," says Jay Rolls, vice president of Telephone and Data Engineering for Cox Communications. "The cost-effective entry price and the economic scalability are great fits with our deployment strategy. In addition, the 1+1 redundancy scheme will provide the system availability and quality that our subscribers have come to expect from all our services."

The BTX-4K is presently in lab trials and will be generally available by October 2004.
