Lucent Technologies Inc. on Tuesday announced an agreement valued at $5 billion to supply Verizon Wireless network equipment, software and services, making Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent the mobile operator’s primary supplier.
Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. wireless carrier, will increase the coverage and capacity of its voice network and high-speed data network based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, Lucent announced.
The pact calls for Lucent to provide a wide range of infrastructure and equipment, including Bell Labs-developed wireless, optical and data networking equipment as well as network management and applications software.
Lucent says Verizon Wireless also will participate in the Lucent Market Advantage Program as the company expands its network and offers its residential and business customers such high-speed data services as corporate Internet and Intranet access and downloading of video and PowerPoint files.
The agreement includes the $525 million contract Lucent announced in March when it was named a supplier for Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess high-speed data network. The $5 billion pact replaces the agreement the companies announced in March 2001.
