Verizon Communications Inc. will be the first service provider in the country to implement LambdaXtreme Transport, a DWDM core optical networking solution by Lucent Technologies Inc., in a three-year pact that will help Verizon expand services for large business and government customers, Lucent disclosed on Tuesday.

The solution, which is capable of transmitting trillions of bits of information across continents, will help Verizon expand its suite of services by connecting regional networks across the United States through an IP backbone, Lucent announced. It also will lower significantly Verizon’s transport costs compared to first-generation DWDM equipment, Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent said.

"This high-capacity ultra-long-haul network is a significant step in expanding the services we can offer customers nationwide, and creates revenue streams through new offerings, such as wavelength-on-demand and video applications," says Claudia Cuddy, vice president of global network solutions at Verizon. "Expanding our reach, reducing our costs and making our network more efficient while maintaining existing reliability all give us the competitive edge we need to support our aggressive strategic direction and growing business needs."
