Ericsson introduced a multiservice edge device for managed data and voice services at Fall VON. The Ericsson HL950 offers real-time communications and secure data over a single access infrastructure, and proactive service monitoring for managed services.

The HL950 is a network-managed customer premises equipment (CPE) solution that supports integrated access and IP-based voice and data services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and branch offices. It integrates broadband access, IP security, advanced multiservice QoS service quality monitoring and SIP/MGCP services into a single unit, reducing capital and operational expenses for carriers, the company says.

"For the first time, operators can offer managed, carrier-class softswitch and IMS-based VoIP, multimedia and mission-critical data over IP broadband networks using a single cost-effective network-managed premise device," says Karl Thedeen, vice president of wireline systems for Ericsson.

The integrated functionality removes the need to deploy and manage multiple devices at the customer premise. It supports IP-based terminals as well as legacy telephony, PBX and fax equipment, so SMEs can migrate from separate data and legacy voice services to converged IP communications, driving new operator revenue streams. The HL950 is interoperable with leading IMS platforms and application servers for IP Centrex and hosted PBX and IP provisioning solutions.

Operators also can measure voice and data service quality to demonstrate performance for service level agreements. A local SIP session controller provides call-admission control and a clear service demarcation point where monitoring takes place.
