BellSouth Corp., the third largest local phone company, has added Nortel Networks Corp’s multimedia customer premises equipment to its IP portfolio, offering additional convergence options to business customers.
The carrier is using Nortel’s Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 for voice and call management, desktop video calling, collaboration tools, video capabilities with multi-point video conferencing and more.
"Customers are consolidating voice and data networks for added efficiencies and capabilities, realized by new applications over secure, reliable transport," says Joan Kratz, vice president of BellSouth’s business marketing division. "This new solution supports applications that bring tangible value to emerging technologies like voice over IP."
The customer premises equipment operates on a SIP-based platform, but can be deployed in a TDM environment as well.
