A variety of companies at TelcoTV this week in Orlando are unveiling new equipment that eliminates the need for telcos to rewire homes to deliver IPTV services.
Coaxsys, for example, will demonstrate its recently introduced IPTV 7000 TVnet adapters, which allow existing Category 5 in-home wiring to support IPTV and other triple-play services.
That eliminates the requirement of having to hardwire Category 5 cable throughout the home to offer IPTV services, resulting in lower costs and quicker introduction for service providers.
Once a TVnet adapter is connected to the video or broadband source, all other coax jacks in the home become network-enabled. Other TVnet adapters can then be connected to any network-enabled device to provide access to the Internet, share peripherals, or stream high-quality digital audio and video, including multi channel TV and HDTV signals.
TVnet can be integrated into set-top boxes and residential gateways.
The company now is shipping adapters to operators, and seeking relationships with equipment providers for the integration of TVnet technology into its products.
In separate news, Entone this week launched a product that also addresses the Cat 5 rewiring issue. Entone’s new Hydra IP video gateway, unveiled this week at TelcoTV, can help telcos realize lower installation costs by eliminating the need to rewire homes for IPTV. Meanwhile, Optical Solutions, an early player in the FTTP equipment market, is releasing a customer premises unit with a plug-in that re-creates the benefits of Cat 5 home networking within the customer premises. It's based on the home networking standard known as HPNA v3. With this module, existing in-home wiring is "turbo-charged" to accommodate the bandwidth demands of FTTP for IPTV and data, according to the company.
