Proxim today unveils two new broadband wireless systems. One is a super-charged Wi-Fi system for public safety and transportation applications. The other is a proprietary LAN extension solution.
The Tsunami MP.11 Model 5054-R, available today, is a point-to-multipoint system based on Wi-Fi technology, but Proxim boosted the power on the system to enable it to cover several miles rather than the several hundred feet found in most 802.11 solutions, making it more like future WiMAX solutions, says Ben Gibson, vice president of corporate marketing.
The new product also includes advanced bandwidth provisioning, mobile roaming, adaptive wireless networking based on OFDM technology and advanced security with privacy protection. It supports three 5GHz bands – 5.25, 5.47 and 5.725 – with a total of 20 non-overlapping channels, and delivers bandwidth of between 6mbps and 36mbps, selectable via user interfaces.
Washington State Ferries is currently using the new system on its boats in the Seattle area.
The MP.11 Base Station Unit with Type-N Connector is priced at $1,999 U.S. list. The Subscriber Unit with Integrated 23-dBi antenna is priced at $1, 199 U.S. list, while the Subscriber Unit with Type-N Connector is priced at $999 U.S. list.
Also new today from Proxim is the Tsunami QuickBridge II Wireless Outdoor Bridge and Tsunami.GX 32 and GX 90 point-to-point wireless Ethernet bridges.
The QuickBridge can be set up in less than an hour to provide a 36mbps connection between two buildings within a metropolitan area. The point-to-point bridge, available today, supports voice in addition to data traffic using two radios, integrated antennas, cables, mounting hardware and power supply, as well as complete installation software and audible configuration tools for quick and easy installation and set-up.
The capacity of the system ranges from 26 to 54mbps.
Available now, the Tsunami QuickBridge II Wireless Outdoor Bridges have a U.S. list price of $6,499 for the QuickBridge II 60 Link, and $7,999 for the QuickBridge II 40 + 2xT1/E1 Link. The Tsunami.GX 32 + 2xT1/E1 and Tsunami.GX 90 + 2xT1 5.3 GHz are also available now, carry U.S. list prices of $7,399 and $11,399 per terminal, respectively.
