Motorola Inc. said today its president, Mike Zafirovski, is resigning. He will remain at his post until Jan. 31.

Motorola, the world’s second-largest phone maker, told the Bloomberg news service Zafirovski will not be replaced after he leaves. Rather, the company’s four division chiefs will report to CEO Ed Zander, Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg also noted that Zafirovksi was the only internal candidate for the CEO post after then-CEO Christopher Galvin said in September 2003 he would resign. Zafirovski stayed on after Zander arrived a year ago, helping to breath new life into the handset unit and getting rid of the company's money-losing chip business, Bloomberg said.

“This is a decision I have considered carefully and which I discussed at length with Ed. This is the right time for me to start considering other opportunities,” Zafirovski said in a statement.

Zafirovski came to Motorola from General Electric Co. in June 2000, said Bloomberg.
