Passave Inc., which makes FTTH semiconductors for broadband access networks, is introducing a pair of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) devices – the PAS5211 optical line terminal and the PAS6211 optical network terminal – that will deliver 2.5gbps bandwidth for GPON-compatible FTTH equipment.

The terminals will provide interoperability for GPON central office equipment and GPON customer premise equipment. Passave says they are part of the company’s efforts to make low-cost FTTH widely available, a challenge considering the GPON FTTH semiconductor requires single-chip integration of gigabit, and faster point-to-multipoint passive optical network transmission topologies at a price suitable for customer premise equipment such as access modems.

The new Passave terminals will be available in 2006. Pricing for the PAS5211 optical line terminal starts at $300; the PAS6211 optical network terminal starts $30 in 10,000-piece quantities.
