VeriSign Inc. has introduced VeriSign Mobile Alerts, allowing tailored mobile content to be pushed to users via SMS messaging.
The service will include weather, news, sports and other digital content. Users can decide to get the SMS at regularly scheduled intervals or on demand.
The first content provider signed on is WeatherBug, a weather information service; a first carrier customer is Midwest Wireless, which will offer weather alerts as part of a service that includes stocks, sports, news and horoscopes for $3.95 per month.
The managed service is part of VeriSign’s Mobile Messaging Platform, a carrier architecture for enterprise-wide messaging that includes content and applications for communicating across devices and platforms.
WeatherBug will leverage a nationwide network of 8,000 WeatherBug tracking stations to provide 24-hour forecasts, three-day forecasts and live local weather conditions.
