BellSouth Corp. is making some reorganizational changes as the company, in its words, continues its transformation from a narrowband to a broadband company.

The changes take effect Jan. 1, 2006 when the nation’s third-largest local phone company creates two new units, one focusing on the retail market, the other targeting business users.

David Scobey will become president of retail markets, which will serve BellSouth's residential and small business customers. Reporting to Scobey will be William Pate, chief marketing office, and Paulino Barros, chief product officer.

The business markets unit will support enterprise and wholesale customers and will be led by Dick Anderson, vice chairman and president. Reporting to Anderson will be Donna Lee, chief marketing officer.

"As competitive pressures intensify, speed to market is critical to success in the communications marketplace,” says Mark Feidler, BellSouth’s president and CEO. “This new alignment is designed to simplify our organization, provide focus on these two markets, and streamline the process for delivering customer solutions. This will better enable us to get the right products to the right customers more quickly."

The reorganization means some people are leaving the company as well. Jan Funderburg, president of consumer services, and Fred Shaftman, president of BellSouth Business, both are retiring Jan. 1.
