Having recently acquired MySpace, one of the leading “social networking” Web sites, News Corp. plans to move even more deeply into new media with a VoIP offering for the service, according to various news reports.

MySpace is regarded as one of the leading social-networking Web sites, which attract a mostly youthful audience as a kind of virtual hangout with photo-sharing and online journals. The site generates traffic that puts it among the top 20 Web sites, according to industry estimates, and has between 40 million and 50 million members.

Details of the VoIP plans were not available from News Corp., but Chairman Rupert Murdoch briefly described a number of plans for the site, including video downloads and a new instant messaging interface, in addition to the VoIP.
