Nortel announced today that rural telcos – Empire Telephone and SkyLine Telephone – are using its SIP-capable DMS-10 switches integrated with access equipment from Allied Telesyn Inc. and Pannaway Technologies, respectively, to deliver triple-play services.

Empire Telephone supports 8,400 access lines and covers over 320 square miles of service territory in western New York. SkyLine Telephone Membership Corp. is an ILEC located in northwestern North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Rob Scheible, senior manager of converged multimedia solutions at Nortel, said the solution lowers the cost for service providers such as Empire and SkyLine because it doesn’t require conversions between VoIP and TDM.

Joe McGarvey, principal analyst at Current Analysis, said now “Nortel can make the claim that the DMS-10 is now fully integrated into a packet infrastructure, one that can offer both voice and video.

“From a services standpoint, Nortel can make a legitimate claim that the DMS-10 enables the same capabilities offered by packet-based Class 5 replacement systems,” McGarvey added. “That's huge because it provides DMS-10 users with assurances they will be able to compete with the Vonages and other VoIP services without ripping out their circuit switches.”
