COMTek on Thursday filed a report with the FCC explaining that its Manassas, Va., BPL system has been found by an independent laboratory not to interfere with specific ham radio frequencies.

The frequencies are listed in a complaint made by an amateur radio enthusiast to the FCC. Ham radio operators have contended BPL technologies interfere with their hobby.

COMTek said the laboratory conducted FCC-mandated testing that included “on/off testing” to show the level of interference with BPL in operation and with BPL turned off. An almost identical level of interference was found in the ham radio bands covered in the complaint to the FCC, regardless of whether or not the BPL equipment was in operation, COMTek reported. This means that, while ham radio operators might have detected the interference reported to the FCC, it does not appear to arise from COMTek’s BPL operations, the company said.

COMTek said in its FCC filing it will continue testing its operations, including for interference with other ham radio frequencies.
