Cisco Systems Inc. has agreed to buy two privately held companies; both offer application creation and integration technologies that Cisco will incorporate into its network architecture, helping development partners deploy new business applications.

Cisco will pay approximately $28 million in cash for Metreos Corp. of Austin, Texas, and $19.8 million in cash for Audium Corp. of New York, N.Y. The acquisitions are expected to close by July 29.

Metreos develops platforms for IP communications. Cisco said this means its third-party technology partners, systems integrators, VARs, and customers will be able to build and deliver more applications on the Cisco Unified Communications System.

Audium creates VoiceXML speech self-services. Cisco said enterprises will be able to integrate their business process workflow with their speech self-service applications.

"Cisco's Unified Communications system enables businesses to leverage their Cisco networks as a platform for integrating voice, video, data and mobility services," said Don Proctor, senior vice president of Cisco's Voice Technology Group. "Using common SOA standards, such as XML and VXML, these acquisitions will help our customers streamline key business processes by integrating their communications environment with their information systems."

When the acquisitions close, the Metreos and Audium products will be integrated into Cisco’s Voice Technology Group.
