Global Crossing, which has more than quadrupled the capacity of its global, MPLS-based IP network, this week launched a wide variety of new services it will deliver over that network to its enterprise and wholesale customers.
VoIP On-Net Plus Service is a network-based VoIP VPN service that lets businesses upgrade to VoIP without having to replace their existing voice gear. It can employ any routing protocol, enabling customers to manage migration to IP at their own pace, and does cross-protocol routing so the VoIP network can connect through IP or TDM.
The company also has enhanced its IP VPN service by adding the IETF’s iMPLS Option B, which offers more scalability and visibility into the service for carrier customers; enhanced multilink PPP for greater efficiency at the trunk group level and the ability to support multiple classes of service; and support for compressed Real-time Transport Protocol, which compresses packet headers to enable the enterprise to realize 20 to 60 percent improvements in throughput on their T1 or other connections.
A new feature called VoIP Community Peering, meanwhile, allows enterprises and their partners to share a dialing plan to realize more efficient and affordable communications to one another. Global Crossing said this service is a precursor to broader peering and community-based communications that will lead to the replacement of the PSTN.
