Seeking to expand its footprint in the cable market, publicly held Telco Systems announced on Thursday it will acquire Metrobility Optical Systems, a private company, reportedly for $7 million.

Telco Systems provides transport and access solutions for public and private IP and TDM networks. Metrobility Optical Systems develops optical Ethernet demarcation tools to help carriers deploy Ethernet services. Telco Systems said it will integrate Metrobility’s Ethernet service demarcation devices into its metro Ethernet access platforms, giving providers a wider range of carrier Ethernet demarcation options, and augmenting Telco Systems’ reach to cable operators.

“Intelligent control at the edge of the network is essential in ensuring the transmission of reliable, high-quality data and voice services,” said Zvi Marom, founder and CEO of BATM, Telco Systems’ parent company. “Metrobility is a recognized leader in this arena, and the combined engineering expertise of both companies will create an extremely comprehensive portfolio for a broad base of customers.”

Metrobility’s demarcation tools can be used on their own or with Telco Systems' T-Metro, an MPLS/HVPLS-based multiservice metro Ethernet access platform, or the company’s T5 Compact family of Ethernet aggregation switches.

Metrobility is based in New Hampshire and distributes to more than 40 countries. Telco Systems is headquartered in Massachusetts.
