Tellabs has snagged a coveted technology award from the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).

The broadband equipment maker was awarded a 2006 GLOBALCOMM Award of Excellence in technology innovation for optical networking for its 6325 edge node, according to the TIA.

Tellabs’ 6325 edge node was chosen for its innovation and “role in driving our industry forward,” said Matt Flanigan, TIA president.

For its part, Tellabs said the product stands out in the competition because of its ability to give service providers the economical benefits of a micro MSPP, all while maintaining reliability and performance. The node, the company added, is especially suited to helping service providers usher in next-generation services because of its design, STM-16 and Gigabit Ethernet capacity.

Tellabs’ other products aimed at service providers include Dynamic Home, for bundled services; Integrated Mobile, facilitating the delivery of third-generation mobile services; Multiservice PLuS, underscoring QoS and assured Ethernet, which helps provide always-on voice, video and data services, according to the company.

In other Tellabs news, the company again will highlight the colossal buying power and enormous market potential – Tellabs has cited the collective purse to be in the $192 billion range – of the Echo Boomers, children of Baby Boomers at GLOBALCOMM. The company said it will air five mini-documentaries during the trade show to help providers target product offerings specifically to this lucrative, and tech-savvy, population segment.
