Verizon Communications Inc. is increasing the broadband speeds on its FTTP network by installing equipment from vendors Alcatel, Motorola Inc. and Tellabs.
The hardware, which will support GPON, will bolster FiOS broadband speeds by up to four times downstream and up to eight times upstream, according to Verizon
"GPON is the next step in the evolution of the all-fiber-access network,” said Paul Lacouture, Verizon's executive vice president for network and technology. “In addition to the ability to boost our broadband Internet speeds on fiber, this new technology will enhance the video-on-demand capabilities of our existing FiOS TV product on fiber and sets the stage for an all-IPTV offering in the future.”
Lacouture added the installments also will save Verizon a substantial amount of money.
Verizon first will install Alcatel’s equipment in its central-switching offices and in new installations of direct fiber-optic links that terminate at a customer's home. It then will deploy the Motorola and Tellabs equipment.
