Juniper Networks Inc. this month will introduce new cards to its E320 that increase the broadband services router’s capacity, density and subscriber scalability.

“All of those things go hand-in-hand to enable operational efficiency as well as drive top-line revenue of our service provider customers,” says Tom DiMicelli, product manager for the E-series.

The new cards can deliver 12 ports of 10gigE per chassis or 192 ports of gigE per chassis, which Juniper claims is the highest density available on a broadband router today. DiMicelli says that because the new cards aggregate on a large scale, the service provider may be able to eliminate a separate network layer of aggregation equipment. “We’ve designed the E320 with 40-gig line module processing, so as customers move to 10gig, the system can seamlessly scale port capacity,” he adds.

The E320, introduced last year at SUPERCOMM, is now in use at more than 28 service providers, including residential multiplay pioneers FastWeb of Italy and PCCW of Hong Kong. Along with the new cards, Juniper also announced today that Bestel of Mexico has expanded beyond its traditional wholesale business to deliver retail services, and that it upgraded its M-series infrastructure and added E-series gear to support that.

Juniper also has announced three new interoperability partners and opened the doors of two new interoperability labs. The company’s technology now is integrated with Hewlett-Packard’s OpenView management solution, which is a key part of the OSS infrastructure at many of the top service providers. Gary Southwell, director of IPTV solutions at Juniper, explains that the integration means service providers now can use OpenView both to manage applications and to monitor and isolate faults on the underlying network, which is sometimes responsible for problems that can affect the application level.

Allied Telesyn is another newly announced Juniper partner, says Southwell, explaining the two worked together to provide the gear that enabled Swedish utility company Telge Energi to deliver VoIP, video on demand, broadcast TV, Internet service and gaming.

Siemens is a third newly announced partner of Juniper. In April, the two companies invested in and opened an interoperability lab for IP gear in Munich.
