Embarq Holdings Co. LCC recently introduced its Smart Connect service, which allows calls to move between a business's wireless and wireline networks without interruption.

The benefit, says Tom McEvoy, president of business markets, is that “the ability to move a call from your wireless network to your office network, and vice versa, can reduce the amount of more expensive wireless minutes you use while in the office."

The basic version of Smart Connect works with any wireless device and network service provider, requiring the push of a button. An upgrade -- Smart Connect Plus -- uses the Starcom Pocket PC 6700 phone to automatically move calls between Wi-Fi and wireless networks.

Embarq so far has rolled out Smart Connect in Charlottesvilla, Va.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Las Vegas; Mansfield, Ohio; and Fort Myers and Orlando, Fla. Embarq developed the technology with the help of NewStep Networks, a company that specializes in fixed-mobile convergence.
