HCL Technologies Ltd. (Booth 20), a global IT services company based in India, and WITELCOM AS, a worldwide access and solution provider for ISPs based in Norway, announced the demonstration of a WiMAX base station unit, DragonMAX BSMX-35, at the WiMAX World USA Conference & Exhibition. The product is expected to be shipped by the end of the year.
The DragonMAX BSMX-35 is the first product jointly developed by the two companies, which recently began working together to develop high-performance, low-cost WiMAX-based pico base station solutions. DragonMAX BSMX-35 was developed based on HCL Wi-Express, HCL’s IEEE 802.16-2004 compliant HMAC (High-level Media Access Controller) software. HCL Wi- Express offers chipset designers, OEMs/ODMs and test equipment manufacturers a standards-compliant, operating system-abstracted, thoroughly tested solution to expedite their WiMAX-compliant product development.
“WiMAX deployments will make significant, positive changes for individuals and businesses around the world,” said Sandeep Kishore, vice president of Hi-Tech at HCL. “We’re pleased that HCL’s Wi-Express software and product engineering team played a key role in developing WITELCOM’s DragonMAX BSMX-35, bringing an affordable and quality product to the market.”
Torgeir Trondsen, CEO of WITELCOM, said offering its customers an embedded solution was a critical step in the evolution of its product line, and the cooperation with HCL made it happen in a remarkably short timeframe. “Our approach to WiMAX is to target smaller network solutions for rural areas, with a limited number of subscribers — perfect for a low-cost pico base station such as the DragonMAX BSMX-35,” he said.
A key feature of the DragonMAX BSMX-35 is highspeed access with up to 37mbps real throughput in the 3.5GHz WiMAX band at 10MHz channel width. It also includes an integrated wide-band antenna that eliminates external RF-cable, with options for 60-, 90- or 100-degree sectors. Each base station supports 100 customers.
