Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices on Monday unveiled its newest home content distribution platform. It uses ultra wideband (UWB) technology for higher bandwidths that can deliver high-definition video throughout the home and does not require any new wires.

The Siemens UWB multimedia home solution -- developed with Tzero Technologies -- delivers transmission speeds of up to 480mbps, which can support high-definition video and IPTV.

"The performance characteristics of ultra-wideband solutions -- including very robust data rates, built-in quality-of-service measures, and at low power emissions -- make it a viable candidate for solutions that cross a wide spectrum of PC, consumer electronics, and mobile and portable devices," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst with Parks Associates. "Given its fit in a variety of markets, we will expect to see greater uptake of its use in the very near future."

Siemens and Tzero said they expect the first prototypes will be available by the end of this year. The UWB multimedia home solution will be demonstrated at the Tzero booth this week at TelcoTV in Dallas.
