AboveNet Inc., a provider of fiber-based connectivity platforms for businesses and carriers, has begun upgrading the capacity of its Tier 1 IP network backbone with Juniper Networks Inc.’s T-series core routers.

AboveNet's private optical network delivers network and IP services in 14 U.S. metro markets and London. The Juniper T-series will enhance the capacity of the network and its existing Layer 2 eWAN service, AboveNet said, and enable it to introduce new services such as Layer 3 MPLS-based VPN Services.

"We have begun upgrading our core network with state-of-the-art technology to ensure we can continue to scale to meet our customers' growing traffic demands and introduce new services," said Rajiv Datta, AboveNet's chief technology officer. "We are expanding with Juniper's flagship T-series to enable us to make this transition."

The T-series has more than 2000 units deployed in networks worldwide. It leverages Juniper's TX Matrix technology, allowing service providers to scale to multiterabit rates without the risks associated with introducing new equipment or operating systems.
