Australian-based carrier Telstra is attempting to reduce network complexity and enhance its level of service by using Tellabs Inc.’s 8800 multiservice router (MSR). The company will use the Tellabs 8800 to eliminate its multiple overlay networks and implement a new backbone that will support more communication protocols.

The company’s goal is to carry all voice, video and data traffic across an IP backbone, while supporting MPLS, Telstra said.

Telstra selected the Tellabs 8800 MSR series because of its flexibility, reliability and ability to interwork with different network protocols. The service interworking capabilities on the Tellabs 8800 MSR enable Telstra to feed ATM/frame relay traffic onto the MPLS backbone. With its converged MPLS backbone, Telstra said it expects to serve enterprise Ethernet customers.

The company has begun deploying Tellabs 8800 MSR in what it said will be a three- to five-year migration to the new network.
