Sprint Nextel Corp. has chosen Nokia as an infrastructure and consumer electronics device provider for its 4G WiMAX mobility network.

Nokia joins Intel, Samsung and Motorola in creating the infrastructure and access devices for the network, which Sprint hopes to begin implementing by the end of the year.

Nokia will supply its Flexi WiMAX base transceiver stations; develop and market WiMAX-enabled mobile devices, including multimedia computers and Internet tablets; develop mobility services and applications; and conduct co-marketing efforts.

In August, Sprint said it would use WiMAX (IEEE802.16e-2005) technology for a wireless network that will use the company's 2.5GHz assets. Sprint said it hopes to cover at least 100 million people on the mobile WiMAX network by the end of 2008.

Sprint said it expects to invest up to $800 million in 2007 and between $1.5 billion and $2 billion in 2008 on the 4G network.
