US Internet Corp. will use Ruckus Wireless Inc.’s customer premises equipment (CPE) for its Wi-Fi network being built in Minneapolis. The hardware will support in-home connectivity .
In addition to the Minneapolis project, Ruckus Wireless also is the exclusive or preferred supplier of customer premise metro equipment for a number of municipal Wi-Fi networks including those in Mountain View, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Toronto; Waterloo, Ontario; Vail, Colo.; and St. Louis Park, Minn.
US Internet is using the Ruckus MetroFlex for the CPE that will provide in-home broadband connectivity to the outdoor Wi-Fi network. The 60-square-mile Minneapolis metro Wi-Fi network, which the city awarded to US Internet in September, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Ruckus also said Monday it has new Wi-Fi devices designed for service providers deploying large Wi-Fi networks. The hardware, dubbedMetroFlex DZ, gives wireless connectivity to outdoor broadband metro networks while simultaneously providing indoor Wi-Fi connectivity to home PCs and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
It is designed as both an extended range Wi-Fi access point and a long-range indoor Wi-Fi receiver that works with any standard 802.11 metro network, Ruckus said.
The MetroFlex DZ is plug-and-play, remotely manageable and supports automatic firmware upgrades. It is priced at $149 and can be purchased online through Ruckus-certified resellers.
