Apple Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. have settled their trademark dispute over the former’s use of the name iPhone.
Under the agreement, the companies agreed both are free to use the iPhone trademark on their products throughout the world. In addition, Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications – which is what most folks thought Cisco was after in initiating legal action on this front in the first place.
Other terms of the agreement are confidential.
The dispute arose when Apple introduced its iPhone last month, a device that pairs the functionality of an iPod and a cell phone, among other things. Cisco obtained the iPhone trademark in 2000 after acquiring Infogear and had several devices using the name.
