Hoping to help advance the slow movement of content distribution across multiple viewing platforms, Tandberg Television and Intel Corp. are working on a publishing system for content owners, programmers and broadcasters.
While the air is thick with seamless cross-platform delivery of video verbiage at the National Association of Broadcasters show, all segments of the entertainment industry admit there’s much work to be done to reach that nirvana.
Providing tools for content developers and owners to publish content for use across multiple devices is high on the list. The system will create/prepare content for any PC platform based on Intel technology.
“We’re creating publishing templates for content providers to bridge from TV to Intel-based PCs, all in a secure environment,” said Joe Franzetta, executive vice-president and general manager for Tandberg’s broadband TV business unit.
The system will comprise the company’s content management package with Intel’s programming configuration tool, according to the companies. It is due out later this year.
Tandberg also is being acquired by Ericsson and it should be finalized once it receives international regulatory approvals. Stockholders have already approved the multibillion dollar deal.
Tandberg and Intel will jointly market the publishing system, while the former will handle the sales, having already established countless relationships in the content industry worldwide, according to Franzetta.
While publishing tools that enable content to be viewed across multiple platforms advance the multiscreen, content anytime, anywhere hype, users still have to deal with multiple formats, codecs and purported industry standards, speakers have lamented at NAB this week.
“There’s a total lack of standardization today and I don’t see meaningful standardization happening for the next two years,” said Franzetta.
One panel session speaker summed up the current state of this situation: “the problem with industry standards is that there’s too many of them.”
