The U.S. General Services Administration on Thursday named the vendors that will provision the Enterprise version of the government’s Networx initiative.
AT&T Corp., Level 3 Communications LLC, MCI Communications Services Inc., Qwest Government Services Inc. and Sprint Solutions Inc. all will bid for individual agencies’ business.
Networx Enterprise is the domestic version of the government’s $20 billion communications network upgrade initiative. The financial terms of the awards were not disclosed.
Each of the winners already was a government contractor, but Thursday's news was especially welcome for Sprint, which did not land a spot in the international contract, Networx Universal. Those vendors were announced in March.
Nearly two years have passed since officials announced Networx. The goal of the initiative is to upgrade the networks and capabilities of the 135 federal agencies — some of which, like the National Weather Service and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, still use outdated analog data services — to include wireless technology and a broader selection of IP services.
