In the race to keep pace with climbing bandwidth-to-the-home needs, Alcatel-Lucent announced Tuesday a card with double the VDSL ports and a POTS interface for its 7330 ISAM FTTH system and a doubling of ports for its GPON system.

The vendor is increasing the port density of its systems to help telcos expand their IP services to the home efforts, as service features such as DVR and HD devouring bandwidth and while MPEG-4 video compression is awaited.

The company also announced a new device designed to specifically serve multidwelling units (MDU) that Steve Kemp, senior director of product marketing for Alcatel-Lucent, said represents a major upgrade of the Cat 3 twisted-pair commonly used in these facilities.

Alcatel-Lucent introduced a 48-port VDSL card with a POTS interface that provides channel bonding – the ability to create one channel from two smaller ones – where its predecessor supports 24 ports without bonding, said Kemp.

The card’s POTS interface enables the system to use VoIP and SIP to switch voice calls without using older TDM technology.

The vendor also announced a four-port line card that enables carriers to configure its GPON system to support a maximum 72 ports. “We’ve essentially doubled the capacity of the system while halving its footprint,” said Kemp.

Alcatel-Lucent’s new unit for MDUs, is air-cooled and can support 24 POTS ports and 12 VDSL connections.
